Installation Instructions   -   Self Contained Tank Assemblies

CAN/ULC S653-06

It is the responsibility of the installer to ensure that the following requirements are met. These are general installation instructions only. For specific details and regulations, you must refer to the appropriate codes and local regulations. For example, for stationary installations, you can refer to B139-04.

1.         Tank Location

Tanks shall be located at a safe distance from property lines, public ways, buildings and adjacent tanks. Tank and containment assembly should be protected from damage due to contact with normal vehicular traffic. Refer to applicable codes and local authorities.

2.         Tank Base

Tanks must rest on a solid level foundation, preferably concrete, and must be able to support the contained tank assembly plus 110% liquid loading. This foundation should

be designed to minimize the uneven settling of the tank and to minimize the corrosion of the components resting on the foundation. All organic material, such as sod or bark, should be removed and soil should be mechanically compacted prior to foundation being laid.

3.         Lifting and Handling

Tank assembly must only be lifted when empty.

To lift the unit, the lifting lugs located on each side of the containment must be used; 4 point lifting system. Do not drop or use this tank assembly to transport any product, or move the tank unless it is empty.

4.         Tank Venting

Each tank must be adequately vented to prevent build up of pressure inside the tank when filling, emptying, or due to temperature changes. The normal vent must be equipped with a weatherproof hood. Both the normal and emergency vents must be installed on the primary tank. All other openings remaining unused after installation must be properly sealed with a liquid-tight plug.

5.         Tank installer shall ensure that all Federal, Provincial, and Local codes with respect to tank installation are met prior to installation.

6.         The tank and containment shall be inspected at regular intervals to ensure that all functions of the original installation remain operational. Any precipitation or product found in the containment shall be disposed of, in accordance with the requirements of the authority having jurisdiction. Annual inspection of the unit should be carried out by the owner with regards to the paint coating and the working parts, and if necessary contact the manufacturer concerning any problems.
